November 7, 2007 Recommendations

The second meeting of the VANOC Board Advisory Committee on Sustainability Performance (BACSP) occurred on November 7, 2007. Members of the BACSP provided the following recommendations to the Sustainability and Human Resources Committee (S&HR Committee) of the VANOC Board of Directors. The intent of these recommendations is to enhance sustainability operations, programs and initiatives at VANOC.

Clarification of Roles — BACSP Members and Ex-Officio Representatives from Government and First Nations
  • BACSP members participate as individuals and not as sector representatives
  • Ex officio government and First Nations representatives to the BACSP participate as resources but recommendations of the BACSP reflect the views of the members and not ex officio representatives

VANOC Response/Status
1. Consider expanding the scope of the IOC’s biennial Sport and Environment Conference from environment to sustainability
This idea has been incorporated into our discussions with the IOC. VANOC is convening the 2009 conference in conjunction with the IOC.
2. Consider the feasibility of a public participation program based on the sustainability goals of the Games.
VANOC, the Province of BC and 2010 Legacies Now are exploring the feasibility of a sustainability public participation program that may have, as a key element, a common web-based delivery platform through which each organization could pursue its public engagement goals on sustainability collaboratively — potentially increasing the collective impact. A Request for Proposal was issued in April, 2008 by 2010 Legacies Now to engage an expert in this area.
3. Consider using arts and culture as a vehicle for inclusion of persons with a disability.
The 2008 Cultural Olympiad included a wheelchair dancing event in its programming. Similar opportunities will be considered for the 2009 and 2010 Cultural Olympiads and for the 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
4. Consider the feasibility of including spectator travel in the carbon footprint of the Games.
Spectator air travel was included in the forecast of the Games carbon footprint released in February, 2008 by VANOC and the David Suzuki Foundation; financing strategies are under discussion.
5. Consider a distinct biodiversity legacy from the Games.
A biodiversity legacy from the Games is under discussion with the BC Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada, venue partners and our Environmental Non-Government Organization Dialogue members.
